How arrive The story has been told of a small child in the village of Hamburg in 845. The Vikings have come to raid her village. Running in fear for her life, in the midst of a mighty battle, she fears all hope is lost. Just as a Viking warrior is about to cut her down, a large raven swoops down and perches on her shoulder. The Viking takes this as a sign from Odin that she is a "chosen one", and her life is spared. She is taken in and named Rota, "she who causes turmoil", and travels along with the Vikings. Later in life, Rota was almost killed in a brawl in a tavern, but a large ornamental hammer that had hung on a wall falls on the head of the man who had tried to slay her. The Vikings then give her the surname of Thorgard "one who is protected by Thor." She travels with the Vikings, as healer, minister and keeper of records. She occassionally joins them in battle. She has been taught to speak in her native German, and also several Norse dialects, so she can act as messenger when occassion arises.
