Wolfgang was born to Dietrich and Grethe during the family's forced exodus across the forests of central Germany in the winter of
what is believed to be AD 1200. The forced march, a result of a treaty between the Western Empire and Brandenburg, and the birth of Wolfgang left Grethe weak and sickly. She died less than two weeks after giving birth. Dietrich eventually left Wolfgang in the ward of some cousins who lived north of Strassburg. Wolfgang would never see his father again. It is believed he died during a pogrom of the Jewish communities along the Rhine.
By the time Wolfgang reached the age of 10, he was an orphan living on the streets of Strassburg. He lived by stealing food and became an apt pickpocket over the next couple of years.
When Wolfgang was around 12 years old, he joined the young Prophet Nicholas and his crusade to recapture the Holy Lands (the infamous Children's crusade). Wolfgang survived the march to Venice, where they booked passage to the Holy Land. Unknown to the crusade, unscrupulous slave traders owned the ships they booked, and of the seven ships none made it to the Holy Land as promised. The ships actual destination was to Egypt to sell the cargo as slaves to the Moors.
Fortunately, the ship Wolfgang was aboard was one of the two slave ships that encountered a mighty storm and sunk. Wolfgang survived floating on some lumber for a number of days. When Wolfgang next awoke, he found himself aboard a pirate vessel, the Maelstrom. He soon recovered thanks to the attentiveness of another youth about his age, Robert Markham. When Wolfgang had made a full recovery, he had formed a tight friendship with Markham and another lad aboard the ship, Kronin. Markham and Kronin made pleas to the Captain of the vessel, Faustus, who agreed to allow the boy to remain as part of the crew.
Wolfgang enjoyed many adventures on the Maelstrom, including the scuffle that followed the liberating of the lass Kyia. All seemed well in Wolfgang's life until the Maelstrom was besieged by a most malevolent storm. By the next morn, only a handful of shipmates survived. To Wolfgang's glee, his good friends Kronin and Markham, as well as the witch-lass Kyia and their Captain, Faustus, were among the survivors. Thus began Wolfgang's adventures in the land, which came to be known as Apokrypha.
Wolfgang fought along side he fellow shipmates under the Maelstrom flag for many years. Later he joined Markham in forming Wolf Pack. A great wound to Wolfgang's leg kept him off the battlefield for the next dozen seasons and Wolfgang enjoyed the life of a retired fighter, though when the need arouse he was still seen fighting with his same pals, Markham and Kronin in the company of the Forsaken.
A full ten years after first arriving in Apokrypha, Wolfgang ended his retirement due to his disgust at the slow degradation of the honor and values that Apokrypha had once stood. He formed a band of veteran fighters called Beorn's Return, named after the most honorable fighter ever to grace the land. This company of fighters soon disbanded when honor and virtue had been restored to the land, but the battle-lust had once again entered the now aged Wolfgang's blood. Wolfgang was next to join the Order of the Nine Hands.
