Magnus, by most current accounts, is a native of Scotland. However, throughout his early career he kept his "true" identity obscured from most.  In the early days, prior to the founding of Broknarra, or the Border Conflicts to expand Apokrypha, Magnus went by the name Faustus von Halstov; then claiming germanic heritage as the son of a retired Landeschnekt. As the stability of Broknarra and the borders of Apokrypha became more stable, he revealed his "true" (according to him) name but a few years before a long trek to the East to address his concerns abroad.  It is widely rumored that Magnus partook in no small share of "privateering" during his trips away from Apokrypha.  It is therefore assumed that the "alias" served other purposes too.

The "facts" that seem most consistent as to his origin, at least as it relates to Apokrypha, are as follows:

Magnus is known to have been among the first recorded folk to settle the region now known as Broknarra.  Among his early compatriots were David "Red Davy" FitzMaurice, Hym the Hunter, Antaega the Wiseass, and Doolin MacKeag.  These folk figure prominently in all of the earliest recorded accounts of Magnus' life here.

This band spent the better part of five years within the safe confines of a redoubt named "The Ville".  Some few compatriots would come and go from this haven, though many key folk would remain.  Among those who remained were noteworthies such as Ayrk LeMastre, Master Altarius, and Michael of Metcalf (progenitor of the "Metcalf" weapons category).

Magnus spent many of these years travelling abroad to expand his education.  During the last of these trips he had what he often refers to as an "epiphany" as to how to better secure what would become Broknarra as well as expand its borders; with the future prospect of a safe and structured realm.   Upon return to The Ville, he shared the ideas with his cohorts and the lot of them set about pursuing the objectives as befitted their respective talents.

In the late Spring of ACI VII, this cadre decided to take what wealth they had accumulated and begin mustering fighting contingents from among the local inhabitants.  The immediate goal was to organize those at hand into a better trained and equipped fighting force as well as sew a common thread among all of the camps that had historically had a considerable amount of in-fighting.  From this effort sprung The Iron Company (often referred to as Condatta), Maelstrom (shortly thereafter), and then Doolin's Teeth.  It is noteworthy, that one band had sustained its affiliation into the founding of Broknarra: Force of Havoc, led by Master Altarius and Ayrk LeMastre.

To establish the third "faction", and expand his wealth, Magnus took a different approach; opting to sail the uncharted coastline and brave Apokrypha's fickle seas (despite the wiser protestations of Hym and Red Davy). On this trip, he sought a more youthful (himself looking less than twenty seasons) crop of fledgling folk to train.   His ship compliment included the Maelstrom, the Enigma, the Vanguard, and the Sirocco (the latter three being "acquired" and renamed along the way). As time and good fortune favored him, his sea-borne exploits set him along the English coast; ultimately making his way to the Ire.  Along this way he recruited (some say adopted) a battery of lads with fire in their belly; spoiling to prove their might in a fray.  Noteworthy among these lads were Kronin DeSunder, Wolfgang von Heimlich, and Robert "the Quiet" Markham.  The lads had, themselves, linked together and wandered about; generally making a quick departure as their welcome would expire (often relating to the exploits of Kronin).

Magnus felt his compliment complete and put into port along the Western coast of the Ire.  It was here that their collective fate would make a profound change. (TO BE CONTINUED...)
