Andalyn was born in Scotland (the precise whereabouts of which remains a mystery) in 1050, assuming the oral record is to be believed. Andalyn's earliest memory was of a bright light in the sky (historically, a comet made its rounds which was "bright enough to read by" in 1054). His life was modestly noteworthy, being beset with sundry endeavors of some merit, most notably of which was having fought against William the Conqueror's troops in 1072 (in lower Scotland in the service of King Duncan) until his near-drowning during his early 20s.
As the tale has it, young Andalyn was being fiercely pursued by Norman cavalry, though some accounts depict a malcontented husband, when he was knocked, by said Normans, free of his steed and propelled into a nearby pond. Being encumbered no little bit by his arms and hauberk, Andalyn was quickly acquainted with the bottommost portion of said pond and, amidst his struggles to wrest free, did finally resign himself that a drowing was afoot.
Having passed beyond consciousness, and assuming the blessed realm (or otherwise) would be next to greet him, he was much surprised to be wrest free of the water by a lad seeming of like age; and a Scotsman, too, judging my his raiment (or lack thereof). One Doolin MacKeag it was to whom Andalyn soon discovered his life was indebted. As well, Andalyn recalls "a grinning man wearing red" who's "grin grew larger and larger as I slipped back into unconsciousness." As it happens, this grinning man was none other than David Roe "Red Davy" Fitzmaurice, an elder counselor and friend to the often wayward MacKeag. Oddly, though, the pool from which Andalyn was plucked bore little semblence to the one he recalled plunging into. A tolerable mystery, he deemed it.
Quickly did Andalyn, Red Davy, and Doolin strike upon friendship (having many adventures amongst the company known as "Doolin's Teeth"), and very soon thereafter Andalyn did learn that he was in the region (or land he would later learn) of Apokrypha. Being gladdened of his rescue, he questioned his new surroundings little, in the beginning.
Andalyn captured much renoun in Apokrypha. Many other tales must wait their turn and many more will no doubt follow.
